The
gist: A radical device from the future
helps an injured celebrity skateboarder become a special ops force of one. And it’s sentient too. Communication isn’t the Blue’s strong point
but healing, strength, speed, weaponry & major Matrix skills are. So our hero Brody juggles low-motivation/minimal-planning
issues, relationships (romantic & frenemies galore), grief, etc. while
rescuing humanity from impending doom (think Skynet) & his own uncertain
destiny.
The lowdown: All these fast-paced events & even the background/info portions (ex. Brody learning about Blue’s capabilities & the Lolas) felt exciting. Interspersed if not slathered throughout the dramatic segments were quotable action movie lines (“Bet your bottom dollar”), ‘90s cultural allusions (“Anoop Doggie Dogg”) & clever/humorous commentary (“my off-the-charts aptitude for saying the wrong thing”). Overall, I loved the comic book vibe & the epilogue zonked me. Totally worth it!
